Saludos friends and family!
I know everyone hates to be asked for money.
I'm writing to you from the lab where I am researching in Spain, because it's crunch time in the Democratic Primary, and this election has turned into the most critical and consequential in recent memory. It's clear from Madrid that the election is not only critical for Kalamazoo or Michigan or the US, but for the entire world.
Not only is it the most important election of my lifetime thus far, but it could perhaps be even more significant to progress in America than John F. Kennedy's election--that is, if and only if the Democratic Party nominates Barack Obama. If not, well, we might switch political parties, but we will surely continue with the politics of polarization and division that have characterized the last 20+ years in America, politics in the pejorative sense, politics as usual, a politics of regression. This is the type of political environment that breeds apathy and cynicism. It's not enough to just change parties. We have to change politics.
If we elect Obama, on the other hand, we have a unique opportunity to create a fresh political environment where consensus and meaningful change will be possible, where "hope for progress" will probably still sound like a cliché, but it might also be realistic!

If you want to know more why I'm supporting Barack Obama, visit my YouTube channel (
http://www.youtube.com/skarefamena). I've made a few personal videos to make my case!
I have donated a total of $40 to Barack Obama's campaign in two contributions. It represents the first political contribution I've ever made. While that's a modest amount of money to some people, it's significant to me.
And as someone who has volunteered for a few progressive political campaigns, I know that even the smallest donations are never taken for granted. This is especially true in Barack Obama's campaign, which has made waves with the immense (and unprecedented) number of small donations and donors. These have formed a critical part of the "Obama movement," of which I consider myself a part.
As Obama has said, this election is not just about asking you to believe in Obama's good judgement and ability to bring about meaningful change in Washington, it's about asking you to believe in yours!
I also know a lot of people who haven't been asked yet to contribute, including probably most of you. If any of you decide as a result of my email to contribute $5 or $10, I'll have helped!

Anyway, best to all of you from Madrid!
Un abrazo!
